Peter Obi Explains Absence at Buhari’s Burial, Cites Flight Unavailability

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections, has clarified his absence from the burial of former President Muhammadu Buhari, which took place on Tuesday in Daura, Katsina State. Obi’s absence from the ceremony drew criticism, but he attributed it to logistical challenges, specifically the unavailability of flights to Katsina.

Speaking on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, after arriving in Daura to pay his respects to Buhari’s family, Obi explained, “It was difficult to come yesterday because there was no flight. Even if there was a flight, you couldn’t land in Katsina Airport. It was all closed, because there was a lot of dignitaries.” He noted that the mourning period extends until Thursday, adding, “Whoever comes today and tomorrow is still part of the mourning.”

Obi’s visit to Daura on Wednesday allowed him to commiserate with the late former president’s family, addressing speculations surrounding his absence at the burial ceremony.
