The State Department announced Thursday that it is reviewing the records of more than 55 million U.S. visa holders to identify potential revocations or violations of immigration laws. All visa holders are subject to “continuous vetting,” and if evidence emerges that a person is ineligible, their visa can be revoked, and they may face deportation if in the United States.
Officials said the review will look for signs of ineligibility, including visa overstays, criminal activity, threats to public safety, terrorist involvement, or support for terrorist organizations. The process will examine social media activity, law enforcement, and immigration records, and any violations committed while in the U.S. The State Department said that since President Donald Trump’s return to office, visa revocations have increased significantly, including a near quadrupling of student visa cancellations. Thousands of student visas have been revoked for overstays, legal violations, or terrorism-related concerns, with a majority involving assault, driving under the influence, or other crimes, and a smaller number tied to support for designated terrorist groups.
