Normalcy has been restored to Okon-Aku community in Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State following a violent incident on January 2 that resulted in one death and injuries to four others. Swift intervention by security agencies and clarifications from state authorities have helped ease tensions and counter misinformation surrounding the event.
The Abia State Police Command confirmed a rapid response to reports of unrest in the community. Under the directive of Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa, officers from the Ohafia Divisional Headquarters, supported by two tactical teams, were deployed to contain the situation, restore order, and prevent further escalation.
Police sources reported that the injured victims were promptly rushed to hospital and are responding to treatment. Security forces have maintained a strong presence in the area, with ongoing patrols to ensure lasting peace.
In a statement by Police Public Relations Officer DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, the command revealed that several suspects connected to the incident have been arrested and are under investigation. They will be prosecuted upon completion of inquiries. Residents were urged to stay calm, avoid vigilante actions, and report suspicious activities via official emergency lines.
As stability returned, the Office of the Deputy Governor addressed social media speculation linking Deputy Governor Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu to the crisis. In a statement signed by Chief Press Secretary Sir Cyril Chukwudi Eke Mba, the office clarified that the Deputy Governor has no involvement in the matter and is not from Okon village.
The statement emphasized that village leadership selection in Ohafia follows customary processes managed by local communities and traditional institutions, beyond the Deputy Governor's jurisdiction. It noted that the underlying leadership dispute in Okon-Aku predates the current administration and is being handled by the Ohafia Council of Monarchs.
The Deputy Governor strongly condemned the violence, including property destruction and threats to lives, while confirming that immediate measures were taken to evacuate the injured to the Federal Medical Centre in Umuahia for advanced care.
Both the police and state government reiterated appeals for restraint, dialogue, and adherence to due process, calling on all parties to support ongoing investigations and traditional mediation.
The incident underscores the importance of prompt security action, transparent communication, and coordinated institutional efforts in resolving local disputes before they escalate into broader threats to public safety.
Residents of Abia State have been encouraged to resume normal activities while cooperating with authorities to sustain peace.
