UK leader Starmer battles to keep job as Mandelson-Epstein revelations trigger crisis    British Prime Minister Keir Starmer was fighting for political survival on Monday as his authority within the Labour Party sharply eroded less than two years into his term. Under mounting pressure from party lawmakers, Starmer was scrambling to head off a potential revolt that could cost him the leadership after a damaging scandal involving his appointment of Peter Mandelson as Britain’s ambassador to Washington. The crisis deepened over the weekend when Starmer lost his chief of staff, and it intensified further on Monday with the resignation of his director of communications, Tim Allan, who said he was stepping aside to allow a new team to be formed.  GOV. ALIA SWEARS IN JUSTICE YUWA, PLEDGES STRONG, INDEPENDENT JUDICIARY IN BENUE

9th February, 2026

Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to judicial independence, accountability, and integrity in Benue State.

The Governor made the remarks earlier today in the Government House, Makurdi, during the swearing-in of Mrs. Franca Yuwa as a Judge of the Benue State High Court.

Governor Alia described the appointment as a recognition of merit, tracing Justice Yuwa’s career from Magistrate Grade II, to Chief Magistrate, and Registrar of the High Court. He said her elevation sends a clear message to young lawyers, particularly women, that dedication and excellence are rewarded in the judiciary.

The Governor assured judges of his administration’s support, noting that more appointments have been made to the High Court under his leadership than in recent years. He said this is aimed at reducing case backlogs, improving justice delivery, and restoring public confidence in the courts.

Highlighting reforms, Governor Alia added that his government has invested in court infrastructure, improved conditions of service, and consistently respected judicial autonomy.

He charged Justice Yuwa to uphold the highest standards of judicial conduct, warning against undue influence, pressure, or inducement.

“Judicial independence must not translate into impunity,” he said, stressing that citizens expect courts to be fair, firm, and guided by truth and equity.
