Enyimba FC midfielder Eze Ekwutoziam has made startling disclosures about the hardships he endured at the club following a serious anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury, as revealed in his recent interview on the SuperSport Naija Made program.
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) player stated that he had to personally secure a ₦1 million loan to pay for his surgery, despite earlier assurances from the club that it would cover the medical expenses. He remains responsible for repaying the debt on his own.
Ekwutoziam further alleged that Sporting Director Ifeanyi Ekwueme claimed no knowledge of his injury when management sought clarification. He highlighted consistent delays in salary payments during his lengthy recovery period.
According to the player, former captain Obinna Nwaneri urged him to count his blessings, pointing out that numerous other NPFL sides would have terminated his contract in such circumstances.
In a particularly contentious revelation, club chairman Nwankwo Kanu, Nigeria's football legend and former Super Eagles captain, proposed arranging a loan from the club to reimburse the surgery costs, with automatic deductions from the midfielder's monthly salary. Ekwutoziam firmly turned down the suggestion.
The player portrayed the ordeal as a painful transformation from demonstrated loyalty to outright betrayal. He had renewed his contract in good faith, aiming to position the club for a lucrative future transfer fee, only for relations to sour dramatically after the injury struck.
