Atiku pledges scholarship to viral Niger teen miner Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Sunday said his “heart breaks” each time he watches a viral video of a teenage artisanal miner, Yusuf Aliyu, speaking at a mining site in Niger State after the deaths of 37 miners in the state. Atiku, in a statement posted on his X handle, said he was prepared to support the boy’s education, describing him as a child whose intelligence and confidence should be nurtured in a classroom rather than by working at a mining site. “I have watched Yusuf Aliyu’s video repeatedly, and each time, my heart breaks. A child with such intelligence, clarity and confidence should be in a classroom building his future—not struggling for survival in a community surrounded by gold but buried in poverty. “I cannot look at him and see an ‘illegal miner.’ I see a Nigerian child failed by the country that should have protected him.  LASRRA SEEKS STRONGER COLLABORATION WITH SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETERS ASSOCIATION

The General Manager of the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA), Mrs. Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola, has reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to inclusive service delivery through enhanced collaboration with the Association of Sign Language Interpreters in Nigeria (ASLIN), Lagos State Chapter.

She made this known while receiving a delegation from ASLIN, led by its Chairman, Mr. Olubowale Shodeinde, during a recent courtesy visit to the Agency.

Represented by the Director, Information Management and Data Protection (IM&DP), Engr. (Mrs.) Christiana Farotimi, the General Manager expressed appreciation for the visit and commended the Association for its dedication to bridging communication gaps for the Deaf community.

She noted that LASRRA remains committed to ensuring that all residents, including persons with hearing impairments, have seamless access to registration and verification services across the State.

The General Manager emphasised that collaboration with ASLIN would further strengthen the Agency’s efforts in delivering inclusive and efficient services.

Mrs. Adebiyi-Abiola reiterated the Agency’s readiness to work closely with ASLIN in deploying professional sign language interpreters to support Deaf residents, particularly during biodata capture and other registration processes.

Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of ASLIN, Mr. Olubowale Shodeinde, highlighted the importance of the partnership in addressing communication barriers and improving accessibility to LASRRA services for Deaf residents.

He also commended the Agency for its outstanding performance in registering residents and maintaining a reliable database that supports the socio-economic development of Lagos State.
