 AFRICAN TELECOMMUNICATIONS UNION ADOPTS ABUJA 2026 DECLARATION ON MEANINGFUL CONNECTIVITY


Africa's digital transformation journey is entering a new phase with member countries of the African Telecommunications union committing to a common framework aimed at ensuring that no one is left behind in the continent's digital future.


At the Union's 7th Ordinary Session of the Conference of Plenipotentiaries, member states adopted the 2026 Abuja Declaration on Meaningful Connectivity for Africa, outlining key priorities for the continent's digital transformation.


These include, digital inclusion and demand stimulation, affordable broadband access, infrastructure development and resilience, regulatory harmonization, capacity building, digital sovereignty, consumer protection and fair fiscal policies.


The declaration further calls on the African Union Commission, the International Telecommunication Union, Regional Economic Communities, development partners, industry, academia and civil society to work together towards achieving meaningful connectivity for all Africans and advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.


Member states are urged to act with urgency and unity, while operators and partners across the technology ecosystem are called upon to invest transparently and collaboratively in closing Africa's digital connectivity gap and ensuring that the benefits of digital transformation reach all sections of society.
