Willie Smith Jr. was traveling near the intersection of Woodland Drive and Waverland Drive at approximately 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 27th when he lost control of his white Chevy Equinox.
Authorities believe Smith may have suffered some sort of medical emergency. There are a lot of unanswered questions surrounding this dramatic accident.
What is known is that after losing control, Smith's vehicle left the roadway and ultimately crashed into the roof of a nearby home.
With the terrain in the area being relatively flat, this seems almost unbelievable. However, it is believed that after suffering the medical episode, Smith must have unknowingly pressed the gas pedal.
This caused the vehicle to obtain a high rate of speed. Tire tracks show the vehicle entering the property of the home, where it eventually crashed through the roof.
It is believed that some sort of landscaping feature or rise in the terrain combined with the high rate of speed sent the vehicle airborne. After going airborne, the vehicle's nose might have clipped the roof, and its forward momentum caused it to up end, before coming to rest nose down in the homes rafters. This explanation is early supposition while awaiting details.
The Bibb County Sheriff's Office has not released any confirmed information regarding the cause of or details surrounding the accident.
However, they have released information regarding the aftermath. Willie Smith Jr. was rushed to a nearby hospital where he passed away from his injuries.
A crane was utilized to remove the Chevy Equinox from the homes roof. There has been no report regarding if the home was occupied at the time of the accident.
Our thoughts are with everyone who loved Willie.
