Not all heroes wear capes... some wear caps. An Oklahoma baseball coach handed a beat-down to a man threatening his team with a kn*fe.
On August 16th, the Cameron High School baseball team was staying the night at a Shawnee, Oklahoma Hotel while traveling for games.
Coach Kevin Loman had ensured his team were settled into their overnight lodgings before retiring to his room.
While trying to relax and soak up some peace and quiet before another day wrangling 13 teenage boys, his personal cell phone lit up with a call. It was one of his boys on the team.
Knowing that the duties of a high-school coach never end, Coach Loman quickly answered.
However, the reason for this call was not something on his radar, but despite the inherent danger connected to the call, Coach Loman had his team's back, 100%.
The call was one of the boys on the team, and he was scared. The fear was real as a strange man had entered the hotel and was currently threatening the young teen boys with a kn*fe.
A combination of a cool head and heavy hands would soon see the team through this crisis.
Coach Loman instructed the boys to call 911 and seek immediate refuge in their room.
He then burst from his room into the hotel hallway to deal with the situation. As soon as he exited the room, he sighted a man later identified as Christopher Stevens, brandishing a blade in a threatening manner towards his team.
Coach Loman instantly demanded Stevens to "drop his weapon". Unfortunately for Stevens, he decided to test the high-school coach.
Upon hearing Coach Loman's reasonable demands, Stevens turned and charged at him. This was a mistake.
Coach Loman let his hands go. He punched Stevens multiple times, dropping him to the hallway floor and neutralizing the threat. Once Coach Loman had Stevens down, he held him there, while awaiting law enforcement.
Officers with the Shawnee Police Department soon arrived on the scene and took Christopher Stevens into custody. While detaining the seemingly deranged man, officers discovered two kn*ves in his possession.
Christopher Stevens was arrested and charged with @ssault with a deadly weapon and public intoxication.
In the aftermath, Coach Loman downplayed his role in the dramatic events of the evening. He contends that he is no hero, and any coach would throw hands any time for their team.
