Cristina Vargas, an 81‑year‑old mother from California, suffered devastating injuries when an SUV crashed into the outdoor dining area of a Los Angeles restaurant where she was eating lunch with her daughter, Gabriela, and a friend.
Surveillance footage captured the vehicle veering onto the sidewalk, sending tables and patrons flying. Gabriela recalled hearing screeching tires before seeing headlights and being thrown into the air.
While she and their friend sustained injuries that later healed, Cristina’s lower body was pinned beneath the vehicle, leaving her with life‑altering trauma.
After three surgeries, Cristina ultimately had both legs amputated. Despite the severity of her condition, she has remained grateful to be alive and determined to recover.
She is undergoing physical therapy at a rehabilitation center and preparing to return home, where she looks forward to being surrounded by family and friends. Gabriela has vowed to provide her mother with the best possible care, emphasizing their commitment to supporting her through the long road ahead.
The driver, alleged to have been impaired, was arrested and charged with multiple felonies. Meanwhile, the Vargas family faces mounting medical bills and daily living expenses. A GoFundMe campaign has raised over $30,000 to help cover rehabilitation and home modifications.
Described as a vibrant, social woman who loved dancing and community events, Cristina’s sudden disability has been especially heartbreaking for those who know her.
Yet her hopeful spirit, combined with the love and support of her family and community, continues to shine as she adapts to her new reality.
