 Tanzania stepping up crackdown on critics after recent polls, UN warns Tanzania has stepped up its crackdown on opponents after contested elections in October that were marred by deadly violence, the United Nations warned Friday, AFP reported. Rights groups say more than 1,000 people were shot dead during three days of protests over elections on October 29 that the opposition and foreign observers describe as fraudulent. Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan retained the presidency with 98 percent of the vote, but the main opposition candidates were either jailed or disqualified. "The government has intensified a crackdown against opponents since the vote," UN human rights office spokesman Seif Magango told a press briefing in Geneva. "Reports indicate that since mid-November, dozens of individuals including academics, civil society actors and local political leaders have been detained, with several arrests allegedly carried out by unidentified armed personnel....

 NLC: Veteran Labour Leader Call For Removal Of Ajaero


Assembly of veteran labour leaders and trade unionists have called for immediate removal of the president of Nigerian labour Congress, Joe Ajaero for his uncouth actions since assuming the leadership of the Congress.


Addressing journalists after the assembly's  adhoc meeting, former vice president of NLC who is  the veteran labour leader, Comrade Isah Tijani accused Joe Ajaero of negligence of fundamentals of the office of NLC president which is overseeing affairs of workers as related with their condition of service with their employees as well as their welfare and instead have been getting involved in trivial issues and political matters.


Comrade Tijani said NLC president Ajaero has abandoned Nigerian workers to their fate in the face of socioeconomic hardship in the country and pursuing self agendas.


The assembly of veteran labour leaders also condemned activities going on at the labour party where the estranged national chairman Julius Abure is doing what they term as unconstitutional.


The assembly also charged Abure to allow normal convention to take place for the party to elect new set of leadership. They accused  Abure of leadership ineptitude and therefore bringing the party to a state disrepute in the country.
