  The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed a viral claim circulating on social media about the introduction of new ₦5,000 and ₦10,000 banknotes, labeling it as fake news. The claim, which included fabricated images of the supposed new denominations featuring Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Chief Obafemi Awolowo, falsely stated that the new notes would enter circulation from May 1, 2025. In a statement on its verified Facebook account, the CBN clarified that the content is not from the bank and directed the public to its official website, (www.cbn.gov.ng), for authentic information. The bank warned against spreading misinformation regarding monetary policies and urged Nigerians to rely only on official statements from its verified channels. The CBN reaffirmed that any major policy decision, including the introduction of new banknotes, would be announced through its official platforms.  U20 Women W’Cup: Falconets cruise past Venezuela, make last 16


Nigeria’s Falconets have reached the last 16 of the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup after defeating Venezuela 4-0 in their final group at the Estadio Olimpico Pascual Guerrero, Colombia on Saturday night.


Amina Bello, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu, and Flourish Sebastine all scored in the first half to put Christopher Danjuma’s side in firm control before Joy Igbokwe added more gloss in stoppage time.


The victory is the Falconets’ second from three Group D matches, with Nigeria amassing six points, the same as Germany.


In the thrilling encounter, Okwuchukwu set up Bello to slot in the opener on 16 minutes before she scored the second with a header on 28 minutes. Sebastine was on hand to tap in deep into the added time of the first half for the third goal.


The Falconets then netted the fourth in added time after 90 minutes; Igbokwe, on as a substitute, scored a screamer from distance with the last kick of the game.


Despite finishing on the same number of points as group winners, Germany (six apiece), the Falconets were dwarfed by inferior head-to-head and goals difference to the Europeans.


Nigeria is set to face the top-ranked country in Group E, a slot to be taken by either Japan or Austria.


The tie will take place on September 13.

 Actor Baba Ijesha appeals five-year jail sentence for sexual assault Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, known as Baba Ijesha, has filed an appeal against his conviction for the sexual assault of a minor. He has requested the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, to overturn the ruling of the Lagos State High Court, which sentenced him to five years in prison. The conviction was handed down by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo (retd.) of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on July 14, 2022 to Baba Ijesha. Baba Ijesha through his counsel Kayode Olabiran on Tuesday, told the appeal court that his client was set up and that he acted according to a script that he was invited to act on by his colleague. “The Appellant was set up.
