Dangote Group Mourns Ruth Otabor’s Death, Offers Condolences After Tragic Truck Accident

The Dangote Group has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner Josephine Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, who passed away on Sunday, August 31, 2025, at approximately 6:30 a.m. Ruth succumbed to injuries sustained in a road accident involving one of the company’s trucks in Auchi, Edo State, on August 13, 2025.

In a statement released on Sunday, the Dangote Group extended heartfelt condolences to Ruth’s family, friends, and loved ones. The company revealed it had been providing full medical and financial support since the accident, including arrangements to fly Ruth to India for advanced treatment, pending medical clearance. “Sadly, despite these efforts and Ruth’s brave fight to live, we lost her today,” the statement read.

The accident, which occurred just six days after Ruth graduated from Auchi Polytechnic, resulted in the amputation of one of her legs. The Dangote Group emphasized its commitment to safety, accountability, and compassion, stating that it would continue to strengthen safety systems and support those affected by such tragedies. “May God grant her mercy and eternal rest,” the company concluded.

The Otabor family, through Eko Solicitors & Advocates, confirmed Ruth’s passing earlier on Sunday, describing her as a beloved daughter, sister, and mother. The family, grieving the loss, requested privacy and noted that funeral arrangements would be communicated later. Justice Segun Ojienoh, representing the family, verified the statement’s release.

Last week, Phyna publicly expressed her anguish over the incident, accusing the Dangote Group of attempting to shield those responsible for the accident that left Ruth critically injured. The outcry followed the tragic event, which saw Ruth lose one leg and face the risk of further amputation before her passing.
