Fawlty Towers star Prunella Scales dies at 93
Prunella Scales, the beloved actress best known for her role as Sybil in the classic 1970s British sitcom Fawlty Towers, has died at her London home at the age of 93. Her sons, Samuel and Joseph, shared on social media that she was watching the show the day before her passing.
Fawlty Towers aired for two seasons on BBC Two in 1975 and 1979, with Scales starring opposite John Cleese as the sharp-witted Sybil Fawlty. Her career spanned decades and included roles in The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Boys From Brazil, Howards End, Wolf, An Awfully Big Adventure, and What the Butler Saw.
Her sons expressed gratitude for the care she received in her final days, writing, “Her last days were comfortable, contented, and surrounded by love.” While no cause of death was disclosed, the family confirmed that Scales had been living with dementia in recent years.
Scales was married to actor Timothy West for 61 years until his death in 2024. The couple also co-hosted the docu-series Great Canal Journeys from 2016 to 2019, showcasing their travels and shared passion for canal exploration.
