Peller Slams Double Standards After Graduate Addresses Tony Elumelu by First Name

Popular Nigerian content creator and influencer Peller has weighed in on the viral social media controversy surrounding a young lady who casually addressed billionaire businessman Tony Elumelu by his first name.

The Viral Incident and Public Backlash

The online debate began after a video circulated showing a young lady greeting the United Bank for Africa (UBA) chairman simply as 'Tony'. The casual greeting sparked immediate criticism from observers who felt her approach lacked the cultural respect typically accorded to high-profile figures and elders in Nigeria.

Sharing his thoughts on the matter, Peller pointed out a glaring double standard in how the public judges behavior based on social class and educational background.

Peller Exposes Classist Double Standards

Peller argued that if a content creator from a less privileged or less educated background had addressed the billionaire so casually, they would have faced severe public condemnation. He highlighted how critics quickly weaponize a person's lack of formal education whenever they make a social blunder.

Interestingly, Peller revealed that the lady in the viral video is a university graduate. He questioned why someone with formal education would speak so informally to an elder, emphasizing that age alone putting Elumelu’s massive wealth aside demands a basic level of respect.

Speaking in a mix of English and Nigerian Pidgin, Peller said: “If it was someone like us who did what that lady did to Tony Elumelu, they would start saying, ‘That is why I say education is important’. That girl is a graduate o. And she open her wide mouth say good morning Tony. Person wey be say make we leave money aside, age alone will cover you down.”

He further lamented how critics are always ready to pull down the careers of grassroots creators for minor errors by claiming they are uneducated, while giving a pass to those from privileged backgrounds who display poor etiquette.

The Cultural Debate Over Respect

Peller's commentary has added fuel to an ongoing debate about traditional African values, modern social media culture, and classism in Nigeria. While some social media users defend the lady, claiming first-name basis is standard in professional corporate environments, others agree with Peller, arguing that cultural respect should transcend corporate norms, especially when addressing individuals of Tony Elumelu's stature.
