UAE suspends trade with Iran after reporting Iranian missile launches toward its waters
The United Arab Emirates has suspended all trade and financial transactions with Iran after reporting that two ballistic missiles were launched from Iranian territory toward UAE territorial waters.
The missiles fell into the water and caused no reported damage or injuries, according to UAE officials. However, the incident marks a renewed threat from the conflict for the Gulf nation after more than three months of relative calm.
Earlier this year, Iran launched weeks of drone and missile attacks against the UAE, most of which were intercepted. The attacks heightened tensions and dealt a significant blow to the country's tourism and aviation industries.
The UAE said it would suspend trade with Iran indefinitely because of escalating regional tensions that it said threaten regional and international peace and security.
Iran has denied launching a missile toward the UAE. Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei rejected the allegation.
The latest development comes as efforts to reach a ceasefire between the United States and Iran and resolve disputes over the Strait of Hormuz remain stalled.
President Donald Trump said Tuesday that the United States is not currently negotiating with Iran and does not intend to resume talks. Tehran has made similar statements. Trump also ruled out extending a 60-day ceasefire that expired Monday after the agreement effectively collapsed.
Control of the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the central disputes in the conflict. Trump has repeatedly claimed the crucial shipping route is open and operating under U.S. control, but commercial traffic through the waterway remains extremely limited. One person was killed earlier this week when a cargo vessel traveling through the strait came under attack.
Iran has also reportedly considered targeting U.S. military installations in Europe if the conflict escalates further, with American facilities in Bulgaria and Cyprus among those considered.
Trump has increasingly directed criticism toward traditional U.S. allies as the conflict continues. On Monday, he threatened to attack Oman if the Gulf nation interferes with U.S. objectives in the region.
He also directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to significantly reduce joint military exercises with South Korea, accusing Seoul of failing to provide sufficient support for the U.S. operation against Iran while pointing to his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
