A barrister from West Yorkshire has been jailed for three years and three months after being convicted of plotting a revenge attack with a criminal client.
Samreen Akhtar, 38, who was based in Huddersfield, had represented Tabish Ali after he was shot and injured on Blacker Road in the town on September 14, 2021.
The following day, Akhtar was recorded during a telephone conversation with Ali discussing a plan to identify the person responsible for the shooting and inflict serious injuries on them, according to police.
Akhtar was convicted of encouraging or assisting the commission of an indictable offence, specifically intending to cause grievous bodily harm.
She denied the charge but was convicted by a majority jury verdict following a five-day trial in June.
At Manchester Crown Court on Monday, she was sentenced to three years and three months in prison.
Ali was described by police as a member of a drugs gang and was later convicted of the murder of Jamal Nedd, who was shot and killed outside his Huddersfield home in December 2020.
Ali and two other men were convicted of Nedd’s murder in July 2022 and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The murder was linked during the trial to an escalating turf war between rival drug gangs involving several violent firearms incidents. Police believe the shooting that injured Ali in 2021 was connected to the same feud.
Detective Inspector Paul Hutchinson said Akhtar would have been aware of the legal and moral responsibilities associated with her profession but chose to become involved in a revenge plot with a dangerous criminal.
The case has raised serious concerns about the conduct expected of professionals working within the criminal justice system.
