 Four people have died after a car was swept away at an overflowing bridge in the Makotopong River near Sebayeng. Police recovered the bodies after a blue Renault Kwid carrying five occupants was pulled into the river during heavy water flow on Sunday morning, 8 March 2026. One passenger escaped from the vehicle and alerted police and emergency services. Police say the car was travelling along the Madiga–Makotopong gravel road when it overturned at the flooded bridge and was dragged into the river. The Provincial Search and Rescue team recovered the first body on Sunday. The victim was identified as Lebapa Petrus Mochitele, 27, from Madiga Village. EMS personnel declared him dead at the scene. Search operations resumed on Monday with the SAPS Water Wing Unit, EMS Search and Rescue, the Fire and Rescue Department, and an EMS helicopter. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) celebrates our own dear Benue State Governor, Dr. Samuel Ortom, as he attains the age of 60 years.
Dr. Ortom is a very courageous, selfless, humble and focused leader, who has remained unwavering in his commitment to his people and Nigerians at large.
Governor Ortom stands out as an exceptionally patriotic Nigerian, particularly in his fearlessness in standing for his people as well as championing the full entrenchment of true federalism as well as the democratic tenets of social justice in our nation.
Despite the challenges, including threats to his life, Governor Ortom has remained resilient and outspoken against attempts by oppressive forces to undermine our constitutional order and statutory rights of the Benue people.
The PDP family is also very proud that in spite of the numerous distractions, Governor Ortom has remained focused in his peace keeping initiatives as well as massive infrastructural development and economic empowerment of the people.
Our party celebrates Governor Ortom and prays to God to continue to protect him and grant him many more years in good health to the glory of God and benefit of humanity.
