 Trial begins of Central African ex-president Bozize over war crimes A UN-backed court in the the Central African Republic will on Tuesday begin the trial in absentia of former president Francois Bozize, over crimes against humanity committed between 2009 and 2013. The alleged crimes committed by members of Bozize's security forces include murder, enforced disappearance, torture and rape. Bozize, 79, who seized power in a 2003 coup before being overthrown 10 years later by rebels, has been living in exile in Guinea-Bissau since March 2023. But three of his former senior military officers, Eugene Barret Ngaikosset, Vianney Semndiro and Firmin Junior Danboy, are all in pre-trial detention in the Central African Republic. Crimes against humanity The case will be heard by the Special Criminal Court (SCC), a hybrid jurisdiction located in the capital Bangui with Central African and foreign judges.  No explosion at Warri Refinery, says NNPCL


The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) said there was no explosion at the Warri Refinery and Petrochemical Company (WRPC). 

Its Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye stated this in a rejoinder which stressed that any contrary report was utterly false.

Soneye said routine maintenance was in progress in the plant.

The statement reads: “NNPC Ltd wishes to clarify that there was no explosion at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC). Any reports suggesting otherwise are completely false.”

NNPCL recalled that on January 25, 2025, operations at WRPC Area 1 were intentionally curtailed to carry out necessary intervention works on select equipment, including field instruments that were impacting sustainable and steady operations. 

“The intervention works are essential to ensure the production of on specification finished and intermediate products, particularly Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Kerosene (Kero).

“The routine maintenance is progressing as planned, and Area 1 will be back  in operation within the next few days. Despite ongoing interventions, over  the past 11 days, AGO loading has been maintained at an average of eight trucks per day, with a sufficient supply available to sustain ongoing truck load-out operations.

“NNPC Ltd remains committed to ensuring uninterrupted product supply and appreciates the patience and cooperation of all stakeholders as it completes these essential maintenance activities,” it added.


No blast, no panic! NNPCL sets record straight on Warri Refinery operations

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has dismissed reports of an explosion at the Warri Refining and Petrochemical Company (WRPC), describing such claims as false and misleading.

In a statement issued on Friday, NNPCL clarified that operations at WRPC’s Area 1 were deliberately scaled down on January 25, 2025, to facilitate essential intervention works on select equipment.

Olufemi Soneye, Chief Corporate Communications Officer, issued the statement from NNPCL’s headquarters in Abuja.

The company said the maintenance, which included upgrades to field instruments, was aimed at sustaining steady operations and ensuring the production of high-quality petroleum products such as Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and kerosene.

It said despite the ongoing maintenance, the company assured that the refinery continued to supply AGO, maintaining an average daily loading of eight trucks over the past 11 days.

It further reassured stakeholders that there is sufficient stock to sustain truck load-out operations.

NNPCL reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring an uninterrupted supply of petroleum products and urged the public to disregard any unverified reports of an explosion.

The company also expressed appreciation for the patience and cooperation of stakeholders as it concludes the maintenance activities, with Area 1 expected to resume full operations in the coming days.
