 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. At about 5:20pm of today 17/03/2020, there was a distress call at Awada Police Station that one Ilione Victoria 'f' aged about 85yrs alegedly jumped to her death from the balcony of an apartment on the 3rd floor in a four storey building where she stayed with her daughter at No 18 Ilodibe Street, Awada.
2. The octogenarian victim reported to be having some mental challenges had her movement restricted and was at home with her care giver, one Judith Amumuche 'f' age 32yrs at the time of the alledged incident.
3. However, before the arrival of the police to the scene, one Ikediaso Benedicta 'f' of 3-3 Housing Estate, Onitsha, who is said to be victim's daughter reportedly took the copse away to an unknown destination but blood stains were observed at the scene.
4. The care giver and other witnesses at the scene are helping police investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
5. Consequently,the Commissioner of Police *CP John B.Abang,fdc* enjoined the public especially those taking care of the aged to be extra careful when handling such persons in order to avert similar ugly incidents please.
