 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. Anxiety As Rivers CP Goes After Erring Officers

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Nwonyi Polycarp Emeka, has matched his words with action, following the arrest of policemen caught assaulting a man in a viral video trending on social media.

The incident, as captured in the video happened on Saturday, infront of Crunches eatery, Oyigbo, where about five policemen where filmed dragging and brutalizing a young man who should be in his early thirties.

This is happening few days after Nwonyi charged the CP Monitoring Unit to monitor activities of police officers in the command, warning that any officer found wanting would be dealt with in accordance with the extant law of the Nigeria Police

In a release made available to TNN by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, the CP vehemently condemned the policemen for assaulting and brutalizing the man.

He affirmed that the policemen in the video have been identified and arrested and are currently at the Command undergoing trial for what he described as their unprofessional act.

Nwonyi added that this will serve as deterrent to other police personnel.

He appealed to the victim to, “come forward to the Public Relations Department, Rivers State Police Command to give his own statement so as to aid conclusion of the investigations and his identity will be protected.”

The commissioner of Police further assured members of the public, that the police operatives will be investigated in line with extant rules underlying the conduct of police personnel and appropriate sanctions meted accordingly.

Nwonyi also reiterated the command’s commitment to promoting the rule of law.
