 ASSEMBLY PASSES BILLS TO RENAME BSU, ESTABLISH AGRIC UNIVERSITY The Benue State House of Assembly has passed the bills to rename the Benue State University, Makurdi after a former governor of the state, Rev. Fr. Moses Adasu. The Assembly, presided over by its Speaker, Aondona Dajo, passed the bill during its plenary on Tuesday alongside another bill. It also passed a bill for the establishment of the Benue State University of Agriculture, Science, and Technology, Ihugh, Vandeikya Local Government Area. The speaker said that the bills underwent thorough legislative scrutiny and were therefore passed. The passage of the bills followed a debate led by a member of the House Standing Committee on Tertiary Education, Douglas Akya, who stood in for the committee Chairman, Manger Manger (APC/Tarka). Senate President, Godswill Akpabio has disclosed why he defected from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Akpabio said he defected to APC to ensure that the ruling party claims all the states in the South South ahead of the 2027 elections.

The Senate President spoke while receiving Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State at his residence in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital.

In a statement by his Special Assistant on Media and Communication, Anietie Ekong, Akpabio said winning the states would change the developmental trajectory of the South South region for good.

He said: “Under the APC administration, many of us decided there was need for us to change the political basket to enable us to represent our people at the national level and also have a say in what was going on in the country.

“So, when I made that strong movement to the APC, it was to move our people in the South South region to the centre.

“With the current political permutations, going by all available indices, the ruling APC is poised to bring more states into its fold.”

The PDP controls Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta States, while the APC controls only Edo State.

  SSANU, NASU threaten strike over withheld salaries The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have threatened to disrupt industrial peace in universities should the government fail to release the withheld salaries of members. The salaries were seized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during their strike in 2022. The unions, in a joint letter signed on Friday by the President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, questioned the rationale with which the government released four months withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but failed to release the withheld salaries of non-academic staff.
