LAGOS SPORTS COMMISSION TRAINS OVER 80 COACHES
As part of its commitment to advancing sports development, the Lagos State Sports Commission (LSSC), has organised a transformative capacity-building training for coaches in the State.
The training, which had Over 80 coaches in attendance was themed: “Way Forward in Building Our Coach" and was aimed at refining their expertise and enhancing their contributions to the growth of sports in the state.
Speaking at the training programme held recently at the Mobolaji Johnson Sports Centre, Rowe Park, Yaba, the Director of the Technical Department, LSSC, Uthman Okunnu, emphasised the importance of continuous education. He reaffirmed the Commission’s dedication to keeping coaches updated on new rules and regulations guiding various sports.
“This is a forward-thinking initiative because as coaches, you must never remain stagnant,” Okunnu stated. “The programme was designed as a classroom format to engage coaches in discussing the current trends and effective athlete management.”
Okunnu also revealed plans to strengthen the synergy between the technical directorate, sports development and sports secretaries to ensure continuous improvement in regulatory knowledge.
One of the facilitators, Dr. Busayo Olayemi from the University of Lagos, underscored the importance of an open-minded approach in coaching. He highlighted that coaches should avoid preferential treatment, ensuring equitable development opportunities for all athletes under their tutelage.
Dr. Olayemi further stressed the critical role of communication in sports, noting that it fosters team cohesion and provides athletes the confidence to express themselves.
In her lecture, Dr. Joy Mayaki, former State and National Athlete, now a lecturer at the National Institute for Sports (NIS), emphasised the need for coaches to master their sport and actively listen to their athletes. She stated, “Patience, knowledge of your sport, clear objectives, and targeted goals are essential. When these elements are combined, they pave the way for success.”
Other experienced resource persons with extensive backgrounds in sports administration and management facilitated sessions on topics such as “Effective Skills and Competency Needed to Achieve High-Level Successes in Coaching” and “Psychological Approach in Building Lagos State Coaches.”
Building on its previous success in training physical education teachers on the fundamentals of cricket across the six education districts, Lagos State continues to prioritize sports development through its school system, recognising its pivotal role in bridging knowledge gaps and shaping young minds.
