UPDATE: AIRLINE OPERATORS SLAM OSHIOMHOLE’S CONDUCT AT LAGOS AIRPORT, DEMAND INVESTIGATION. (PHOTO).

Airline Operators Slam Oshiomhole’s Conduct at Lagos Airport, Demand Investigation

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) has condemned the behavior of former Edo State Governor, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, at Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, labeling it as “unruly” and “unacceptable.” The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has sparked widespread concern over the growing trend of disruptive passenger behavior toward domestic carriers.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos during an event where United Nigeria Airlines announced its integration into the SIBAS Global Distribution System, AON spokesperson Professor Obiora Okonkwo expressed dismay at Oshiomhole’s actions. “No amount of disappointment justifies self-help. What we saw was a typical case of unruly behavior,” Okonkwo stated, emphasizing that Air Peace, which carries 40 to 50 percent of Nigeria’s domestic passengers, deserves respect as a significant industry player. “It is not right to demonize the airline. There’s no logic in his [Oshiomhole’s] statements. No airline wants to leave passengers behind,” he added.

Okonkwo also criticized the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) for its silence two days after the incident, calling for clarity on what transpired.

In response, Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has ordered a thorough investigation by relevant aviation agencies. In a statement on his X handle, Keyamo revealed he had been in contact with both Oshiomhole and Air Peace since the incident. “I have directed the aviation agencies to exercise restraint and adhere to the principle of ‘hear all sides’ before reaching conclusions,” he said. Keyamo urged both parties to refrain from public accusations while the investigation gathers evidence to guide future conduct in similar situations.

The incident has heightened calls for stricter measures to address unruly passenger behavior in Nigeria’s aviation sector.
