The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has intensified its monitoring and compliance activities against the indiscriminate discharge of untreated wastewater, sealing 14 properties across Ikotun, Ikoyi, Isheri-Osun, Lagos Island, Ikorodu and Amuwo-Odofin for violations ranging from illegal sewage discharge to unauthorised connections to public drainage infrastructure.
The operations, carried out in response to public complaints and findings from routine monitoring and investigations, underscore the Office’s renewed drive to protect public health, safeguard the environment and ensure compliance with Lagos State wastewater management regulations.
Commenting on the exercise, the General Manager of LSWMO, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, explained that the affected properties were found to have been discharging untreated sewage from septic tanks and other wastewater systems directly into public drains, ongoing drainage works and the surrounding environment.
In some cases, the violations involved broken or dilapidated sewer chambers, illegally connected sewer pipes and deliberate pumping of septic tank contents into public drainage channels, causing foul odour, faecal contamination, environmental nuisance and potential public health risks.
He said the agency would continue to take decisive action against practices capable of exposing residents and communities to environmental and public health risks. “Wastewater management is not optional. It is a public health responsibility. Where untreated sewage is deliberately discharged into public drains or the environment, the consequences go beyond the property involved. It creates environmental nuisance, exposes communities to health risks and undermines the State’s efforts to build a cleaner and more sustainable Lagos.”
Engr. Afolabi stressed that the monitoring and compliance drive was not targeted at any particular location or category of property, noting that property owners, residents, facility managers and businesses are expected to comply with approved wastewater management practices.
In his words, “We will continue to respond to credible complaints and act wherever our investigations establish violations. Our commitment is to ensuring that wastewater generated by residential, commercial and institutional properties is properly contained, treated and disposed of through approved channels”.
The Agency reiterated its call on members of the public to report suspected cases of illegal wastewater discharge and other environmental infractions, noting that timely reports would assist officers in investigating and addressing violations.
Members of the public can report wastewater infractions to LSWMO through 08022022397 and 07025332163, or via its social media platforms: @lswmomedia on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), and Lagos State Wastewater Management Office on Facebook.
