Agony of three million Nigerians stranded in Sudan 29 April 2023  Intense clashes between Sudan’s military and the country’s main paramilitary force have killed hundreds of people and sent thousands fleeing for safety, as a burgeoning civil war threatens to destabilise the wider region. Attempts by Nigeria to evacuate her over three million citizens have been shoddy exposing them to danger. The crisis erupted in the middle of April amid an apparent power struggle between the two main factions of the Sudanese military hegemony that are broadly loyal to Gen Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, the country’s de facto ruler, and the paramilitaries of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a collection of militia that follow the former warlord Gen Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, known as Hemedti. The power struggle has its roots in the years before a 2019 uprising that ousted the dictatorial ruler Omar al- Bashir, who built up formidable security forces that he deliberately set against one another. 500 police retirees die nationwide 27 April 2023  Over 500 police pensioners in Nigeria have reportedly died as a result of poverty over the last few decades, according to Lawal Mansir Zaria, the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Police Pensioners Association (NPPA). Zaria called for a speedy reading of the new pension Bill for retired police officers, which is currently before the Senate. “We are calling on the National Assembly to use the remaining few days in office to approve the new pension scheme for retired police officers,” Zaria stated. Zaria criticized the current contributory pension scheme for police officers, describing it as “disgusting” and “painful,” given that they have served their country for 35 years meritoriously. “How can you explain a situation where some of our members received as low as N16,000, N18,000, N23,000 etc as pension every month? When you even think it’s from your own money, it makes one sick,” Zaria added. He went on to say that “We want all our moni...
