 UK approves sweeping law to ban cigarette sales for future generations  The United Kingdom has taken a major step toward eliminating smoking among future generations after lawmakers approved sweeping legislation that bans the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products to anyone born on or after Jan. 1, 2009. The measure, one of the most aggressive anti-tobacco efforts globally, ensures that today’s children will never be legally sold cigarettes. It also outlaws the sale and supply of herbal smoking products and cigarette papers to the same age group, while introducing a nationwide ban on snus, an oral tobacco product. The law establishes strict enforcement measures, including fines for retailers who fail to verify ages and harsher penalties for repeat violations, with courts given the authority to suspend businesses from selling tobacco or vaping products for up to a year. Eminent Nigerian patriots are slated to be in Enugu today for the second edition of ‘Handshake Across Nigeria”- a meeting intended to foster national unity.

Chairman of South East Governors’ Forum (SEGF), Chief David Umahi of Ebonyi State would lead his colleagues from the zone; Governors Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Chukwuma Soludo (Anambra), Hope Uzodimma (Imo) and the chief host, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), to the programme.

Details from Chairman, Nzuko Umunna Handshake Across Nigeria Planning Committee, Nze Ozichukwu Chukwu stated that eminent lawyer, Chief Mike Ozekhome will deliver the keynote on the theme: “Building bridges for a new Nigeria,” while the guest speakers are Dr Hakeem Baba Ahmed, spokesman of Northern Elders Forum (NEF), Dr Regina Amadi Njoku, Sen. Shehu Sani and Iba Gani Adams, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of the Yoruba Nation.

The information further stated that the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ adu Abubakar, Igwe Lawrence Agubuzu, Chairman, South East Council of Traditional Rulers, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Ooni of Ife, and Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, Obi of Onitsha, are royal fathers of the day.

According to the organisers, the “Handshake Across Nigeria” project is dedicated to expanding friendships and cementing bonds between Ndigbo and other nationalities of Nigeria.
