 Convicted war criminal Lubanga announces new rebel group in east Congo A convicted war criminal based in Uganda has announced a new rebel movement intent on toppling the government in eastern Congo's Ituri province, creating another potential security threat in the war-scarred region, Reuters reported. The formation of the Convention for the Popular Revolution (CPR) by Thomas Lubanga, an Ituri native, comes as Congo's army faces an unprecedented advance by Rwandan-backed M23 rebels elsewhere in eastern Congo. The International Criminal Court secured its first conviction against Lubanga in 2012 on charges of recruiting child soldiers and sentenced him to 14 years in prison. He was released in 2020 and President Felix Tshisekedi appointed him to a task force to bring peace to Ituri. But in 2022 he was taken hostage for two months by a rebel group, which he blames on the government, and is now based in Uganda. Rwanda's Kagame names four new major-generals

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has named four new major-generals.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has named four new major-generals, a statement from the presidency said on Tuesday.

The four are Ephraim Rurangwa, who is currently serving as the commandant of Rwanda's Military Hospital; John Baptist Ngiruwonsanga, the commandant of the General Headquarters; Denis Rutaha, the commandant of the Combined Training Centre and Vincent Gatama, the fourth Division Commander.

In June, Kagame promoted 17 senior soldiers from the rank of colonel to brigadier-general. Godfrey Gasana, the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Rwandan Air Force, was among those promoted to brigadier-general.

Eighty-three lieutenant colonels were promoted to the rank of colonel in June, while those elevated to lieutenant colonel from major were 98.

Two hundred and ninety-five captains were promoted to the rank of major.

 Actor Baba Ijesha appeals five-year jail sentence for sexual assault Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, known as Baba Ijesha, has filed an appeal against his conviction for the sexual assault of a minor. He has requested the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, to overturn the ruling of the Lagos State High Court, which sentenced him to five years in prison. The conviction was handed down by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo (retd.) of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on July 14, 2022 to Baba Ijesha. Baba Ijesha through his counsel Kayode Olabiran on Tuesday, told the appeal court that his client was set up and that he acted according to a script that he was invited to act on by his colleague. “The Appellant was set up.
