Yemen fighting pushes nearly 3,000 to Djibouti in less than a week: UN    Nearly 3,000 people have fled Yemen for Djibouti in less than a week as escalating violence drives growing displacement within the country and across its borders, the UN refugee agency said Friday. “Refugees continue to arrive by boat through Obock, Khor Angar, Moulhoule and Godoria after difficult journeys in small vessels,” UNHCR representative in Djibouti Sandrine Desamours told reporters in Geneva, Anadolu Agency reported. More than half of those crossing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are women and children, while some families have been displaced for a second time after previously fleeing Yemen during the 2015 crisis and later returning. UNHCR is preparing for at least 10,000 new arrivals but warned that capacity is rapidly diminishing.  Rivers State Govt takes over prosecution of murder trial of UNIPORT student


The Rivers State Government has taken over the prosecution of the murder trial of Damian Okoligwe, a 400L student in the Department of Petrochemical Engineering at the University of Port Harcourt.

Okoligwe was accused in 2023 of killing his girlfriend, Justina Otuene, a 300L Biochemistry student at the same university.

Following the arraignment of the suspect by the Rivers State Police Command, the Office of the Attorney General of Rivers State filed charges against Okoligwe in the State High Court, after receiving advice from the Department of Public Prosecution, DPP.

During Tuesday’s court proceedings, the defendant, Okoligwe, and his legal representative were not present.

The presiding judge, Justice C. A. Nsirim, adjourned the case to Tuesday, April 23, 2024, and directed that the suspect be brought to court to enter his plea on the specified date.
