 DR Congo arrests 17 Chinese men for running an illegal gold mine Seventeen Chinese nationals have been arrested on suspicion of running an illegal gold mine in Democratic Republic of Congo, authorities said, as the government pressed on with a crackdown on unlicensed extraction of its minerals, Reuters reported. The men were brought into the press conference called to announce their detention in Bukavu, the main town in strife-torn South Kivu province. They sat on chairs without restraints and did not speak to journalists. The men were arrested after a government delegation made an unannounced visit to the mine site in the village of Karhembo on Thursday, the province's finance minister and acting mines minister, Bernard Muhindo, said. "We asked them to present us with the company's documents. There were no documents, zero. No certificate, no status, no national identification, nothing," Muhindo said.  Ten confirmed dead in stampede during food sharing in ABuja


Ten persons have been confirmed de@d in a stampede at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Maitama, on Saturday, 21st December 2024, during the distribution of food items to vulnerable and elderly persons.  


The tragic event, which happened at about 6:30 am, claimed the lives of ten (10) individuals, including four (4) children, and left eight (8) others with varying degrees of injuries. Four (4) of the injured have been treated and discharged, while the remaining victims are receiving medical care.  


The FCT Police Command in a statement released by its spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident and sympathised with the families of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
