EARLIER REPORT:
Nigeria's Federal Government has announced a major overhaul of its education system, scrapping the Junior Secondary School (JSS) and Senior Secondary Schools (SSS) models in favor of a compulsory 12-year uninterrupted basic education model. This new approach aims to provide students with a standardized curriculum, eliminating financial and systemic barriers that currently prevent many from completing secondary education.
Under the new system, students will receive continuous education up to the age of 16, after which they can pursue higher education. This reform will replace the existing 6-3-3-4 education structure with a 12-4 model, aligning Nigeria's educational standards with global best practices.
Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, emphasized that extending basic education to 12 years will ensure a uniformly implemented curriculum across the nation. This will also facilitate early exposure to vocational and entrepreneurial skills, preparing students for both higher education and employment.
The benefits of this reform are numerous. It will reduce dropout rates, provide students with foundational knowledge before specializing at tertiary levels, and foster better educational outcomes and global competitiveness. By introducing this new model, Nigeria is taking a significant step towards revamping its education system and providing its youth with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in an increasingly competitive world.
