The Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Bayo Ojulari, has once again failed to appear before the Senate Committee on Public Accounts, defying a 10-day ultimatum to address allegations of unaccounted funds totaling N210 trillion.
During Thursday’s hearing, Ojulari sent representatives to stand in for him, but the committee, chaired by Senator Aliyu Wadada, refused to engage with them, insisting that only the NNPCL GCEO himself could respond to the 11 critical financial queries raised in the company’s audited financial statements from 2017 to 2023.
Senator Wadada described Ojulari’s repeated absence as a direct affront to the National Assembly’s authority and a violation of its oversight responsibilities. “The Senate will not tolerate further disregard,” Wadada warned, vowing to set a new date for Ojulari to appear in person.
This marks the second time the NNPCL leadership has ignored the Senate’s summons. Previously, the NNPCL’s Chief Financial Officer, Dapo Segun, cited a management retreat as the reason for their absence. The Senate’s ultimatum followed concerns over discrepancies in NNPCL’s financial records, prompting lawmakers to demand accountability from the state-owned oil company.
The committee’s insistence on Ojulari’s personal appearance underscores growing tensions between the National Assembly and NNPCL over transparency and financial oversight. Further developments are expected as the Senate prepares to issue a new directive for the NNPCL GCEO’s appearance.
