The U.S. military has evacuated roughly 1,000 nonessential personnel from the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base ahead of Hurricane Melissa, which is battering the Caribbean. Families and pets of nonessential staff were flown to Naval Air Station Pensacola in preparation for the storm, allowing the base to reduce operations and streamline recovery once the hurricane passes.
Pensacola’s Fleet and Family Support Center opened an Emergency Family Assistance Center to provide lodging, essential supplies, and other support for evacuees. Capt. Chandra Newman, commanding officer at NAS Pensacola, said personnel were focused on “taking care of our Navy family from Guantanamo Bay.” The remaining 3,000 residents at the base moved into temporary shelters at a gym and a new K–12 school, bringing bedding and supplies to last three days. Hurricane Melissa, the strongest storm recorded globally so far this year, previously hit Jamaica, killing at least seven people, and is expected to move toward southeastern Cuba as a major Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 145 mph.
