Rivers NASS Caucus Declares Amaewhule, Others No Longer Lawmakers

The Rivers State National Assembly Caucus has reaffirmed that former Speaker Martin Amaewhule and 26 other lawmakers are no longer members of the Rivers State House of Assembly following their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) on December 11, 2023.

During a solidarity visit to Speaker Victor Oko-Jumbo, the Caucus, led by Hon. Awaji-Inombek Abiante, dismissed claims that a Federal High Court ruling reinstated the defected lawmakers. They cited constitutional provisions and Supreme Court rulings, emphasizing that lawmakers who defect from their party automatically lose their seats.

Speaker Oko-Jumbo welcomed the support, stating that the Assembly remains functional despite the vacancies. The Caucus also urged Rivers residents to disregard any misleading narratives from the defected lawmakers.
