Israeli airstrikes hit Gaza on Wednesday, killing at least 21 Palestinians, including two infants, and heightening tensions around a fragile ceasefire, according to hospital officials. Israel said the attacks were in response to a militant assault on its soldiers that seriously wounded one. Among those killed were five children, seven women, and a paramedic on duty.
The strikes underscore the ongoing fragility of the truce, which took effect on Oct. 10. Gaza health authorities reported that 556 Palestinians have been killed and 1,500 wounded since the ceasefire began, while Israel says four soldiers have been killed. The heaviest fighting has eased, but flare-ups have continued, with Israel maintaining its attacks are responses to Hamas violations. Early Wednesday, a strike in Gaza City’s Tuffah neighborhood killed 11 people from the same family, including two infants, while other attacks in Khan Younis killed at least five more, including a 12-year-old boy and a paramedic. Humanitarian passage through the Rafah border remains limited and slow, with reports of interrogations and delays. While some aspects of the ceasefire have moved forward, including the release of hostages and increased aid, key elements such as Hamas disarmament and Gaza reconstruction have yet to progress. Over 71,800 Palestinians have died since the start of the war, according to Gaza health authorities.
