 [ASSEN SAPS MEMBERS ASSIST WOMAN IN GIVING BIRTH AT POLICE STATION] Assen SAPS members assisted a female suspect who went into labour at the police station on Thursday, 8 October 2026, helping her deliver a healthy baby girl before she and the newborn were taken to a medical facility. According to reports, members were on duty at Assen SAPS under the command of Sergeant Chidi, when they received a telephone call regarding the arrest of a female suspect at Msholozi informal settlement in Kameeldrift. Constable Olivier and Constable Mokhutshoane responded to the call and arrested the suspect, who was reportedly in good health and had no visible injuries at the time of the arrest. She was subsequently taken to Assen SAPS. While at the police station, the suspect began experiencing labour pains and an ambulance was immediatly summond.  15-year-old student sues Education Ministry, JAMB, NUC over admission policy Master Chinaemere Opara has sued the Federal Ministry of Education, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and the National Universities Commission (NUC) over the government’s policy which seeks to limit admissions into Nigerian universities to applicants who attain the age of 18. Opara, a 15-year-old Senior Secondary School (SSS) Student, filed the suit through his guardian, Mr. Maxwell Opara, his father and a lawyer, at the Federal High Court in Abuja, yesterday. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that in the originating motion marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1512/2024 dated Sept. 30 and filed Oct. 14 by Wayne Elijah, the SS 2 student listed the ministry, JAMB and NUC as 1st to 3rd respondents respectively.  New Leadership of ECOWAS Court of Justice Sworn-in  Justice Ricardo Claúdio Monteiro Gonçalves has been elected as the new President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, for a two-year term of office. Following an election by the college of five judges of the Court, Justice Ricardo succeeds Justice Edward Amoako Asante who led the Court for six years since assuming office on July 31, 2018. A statement by ECOWAS recalls that Justice Ricardo was sworn-in on Thursday, October 6, 2022 in Guinea Bissau by Former President of the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Community, President Umaro Sissoco Embalo for a non-renewable  term of four (4) years. The statement also confirms the election of Justice Ricardo Sengu Mohamed Koroma as Vice-President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice.

 New Education Curriculum To Commence In January 2025 – Minister The Federal Ministry of Education on Monday announced that the new curriculum for basic education will commence across schools in the country by January 2025. The Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman who disclosed this in Abuja, at a stakeholders meeting on the implementation of the new curriculum, said the new curriculum for senior secondary education would also commence by September 2025. Professor Mamman stated that the new curriculum will address problems of learning crises and employability as the new skills acquisition to be introduced will have a multiplier effect by equipping students with 21st-century skills. He noted that the next three months will be used for the preparatory stage, including preparing teachers’ guides in using the curriculum.  Libya threatens legal action over Nigeria’s withdrawal from AFCON qualifier The Libyan Football Federation has condemned Nigeria’s decision to withdraw from the scheduled 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, threatening to take legal action to protect its national team’s interests. The Super Eagles cited safety concerns after being stranded at Al Abaq Airport for over 13 hours following an unexpected diversion on Sunday, prompting Nigeria to pull out of the match, initially set for Tuesday, October 15. In its statement shared by The Libya Observer, the LFF accused the Nigerian Football Federation of failing to cooperate in organising the match and causing the confusion that led to the current situation.  NFF Narrates Super Eagles’ 20-Hour Ordeal In Libya The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has recounted how the Super Eagles’ 20-hour ordeal in Libya. Players and officials were stranded for hours at a Libyan airport and denied access to food and the internet as they prepared to honour their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier with the Mediterranean Knights. It took diplomatic efforts and social media callouts for the team to be cleared to finally leave Libya. After they landed in Nigeria, the NFF’s Director of Communications Ademola Olajire narrated how the team and officials were held in Libya.
