France records hottest day ever as exceptional early summer heat wave grips Europe     France recorded its hottest day in history on Tuesday as an exceptionally early and intense summer heat wave blanketed Europe, endangering millions and disrupting daily life across the continent. The country’s national thermal indicator—a calculated nationwide average from 30 weather stations—surpassed all previous historic milestones to reach 29.8°C (85.6°F), eclipsing the previous high-water marks set during severe heat waves in August 2003 and July 2019. Individual weather stations also recorded daytime highs surging past 40°C (104°F). The extreme weather has already proven fatal, with 40 drownings reported over the past week as people, primarily youth, sought relief from the stifling conditions.
