 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police. Amegor was first arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission,EFCC,on 21st day of February,2013 on a two count charge bordering on possession of fraudulent documents containing false pretences and Obtaining by false pretence.Amergor upon arraignment pleaded not guilty to the charge.After diligent prosecution by the EFCC,Justice P.I. Ajoku found Amegor guilty on he two count charge and consequently convicts and sentenced him to two years imprisonment without an option of fine on each of the charge.The sentences are to run concurrently.Amergor was arrested with some others suspected to be in internet fraud at No. 56 Siloko Road,Benin City,Edo State on 18th of January,2013 by the men of JTF,4 Brigade,Nigerian Army,Benin following intelligence report on their involvement in internet scams.Laptop computers and phones were recovered from their homes at the point of arrest and they were handed over to EFCC,for further investigation and possible prosecution.Meanwhile,the twenty others have been charged separately..Justice Ajoku after listening to the plea of leniency of the defence counsel and the convict promising to turn a new leaf,sentenced him to two years imprisonment on each of the counts.
