 Heavy fighting reported between Sudanese army, rival RSF in southern Sudan Fierce clashes were reported Tuesday between the Sudanese army and its rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in the strategic city of El-Obeid, the capital of North Kordofan state in southern Sudan. A military source told Anadolu that the army inflicted heavy losses on RSF's troops and equipment, forcing them to flee positions. Witnesses said clashes with heavy weapons erupted in the western areas of El-Obeid in the early hours of Tuesday, but calm was later restored to the city. The RSF is yet to comment on the army’s announcement. The city recently endured intensified artillery shelling by RSF militants, resulting in fatalities and casualties. The army announced Thursday it had cleared the last RSF pockets in Khartoum, after regaining control of the capital’s airport, security headquarters and several neighborhoods in the east and south for the first time since April 2023. Richard Montgomery is new British High Commissioner to Nigeria

The UK government has appointed Dr Richard Montgomery as the country’s new High Commissioner to Nigeria.

 Montgomery takes over from Ms Catriona Laing who recently concluded four years as High Commissioner to Nigeria.


The UK High Commission in a statement issued in Abuja stated that Montgomery on Thursday presented his letter of credence to President Muhammadu Buhari.


It stated that Montgomery reaffirmed commitment to strengthening the ties between the UK and Nigeria.


“I look forward to working with the people of this great country, including those in government, in the private sector and in civil society.


“I will do all I can to help build a more prosperous Nigeria and strengthen the partnership between our countries”, the statement quoted him as saying.


Richard is an experienced diplomat who has worked in different parts of the world including previously in Nigeria.


Prior to becoming the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard was the UK Executive Director at the World Bank Group Board from 2018 to 2022 in Washington DC, USA.


He has held various senior positions in the Department of International Development (DFID) including; Director for Asia, Caribbean & Overseas Territories Division, Country Director for Pakistan.


He also previously served as the DFID Country Director in Nigeria from 2009 to 2013.


Montgomery has served previously at the British High Commissions in Zambia, Bangladesh and India.

 Actor Baba Ijesha appeals five-year jail sentence for sexual assault Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, known as Baba Ijesha, has filed an appeal against his conviction for the sexual assault of a minor. He has requested the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, to overturn the ruling of the Lagos State High Court, which sentenced him to five years in prison. The conviction was handed down by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo (retd.) of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on July 14, 2022 to Baba Ijesha. Baba Ijesha through his counsel Kayode Olabiran on Tuesday, told the appeal court that his client was set up and that he acted according to a script that he was invited to act on by his colleague. “The Appellant was set up.
