 Senate Approves Death Penalty For Drug Traffickers The Senate has approved the death penalty for those convicted on the charge of drug trafficking in the country. The punishment prescribed in the extant NDLEA Act is a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. The resolution of the Senate followed its consideration of a report of the Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters and Drugs and Narcotics, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The Chairman of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters presented the report during plenary, Sen.Mohammed Monguno (APC-Borno North). The bill, which passed its third reading, aims to update the list of dangerous drugs, strengthen the operations of the NDLEA, review penalties, and empower the establishment of laboratories. NUJ Anambra set to hold 2023 Man of the Year Award

All roads will on November 2, lead to Godwin Ezeemo International Press Centre, Awka, venue for the epoch-making event of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Anambra State Council's Man of the Year Award, bringing to an end the week long program marking the 2023 Press Week.

The Traditional Ruler of Ogidi kingdom, Igwe Pharm Alexander Uzodimma Onyido who is the recipient of the 2023 Man of the Year Award defeated other contestants to emerge the best after a rigorous process.

In a statement by the Chairman of NUJ, Odogwu Emeka Odogwu PhD, the 2022 edition which was the first under his watch had the Deputy Managing Director of Zenith Bank, Dame, (Dr) Adaora Umeoji as the recipient.

According to him, the Executive Governor of Anambra State, Prof Chukwuma Soludo is expected to grace the occasion as distinguish guest of honor while the event will be chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academics, Paul University, Awka, Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna.

The National Chairman of APGA, Sly Ezeokenwa (Esq) will be the Keynote Speaker and he will be speaking on the theme: "Pragmatic Media Practice as an Antidote to Sustainable Development in a Distressed Economy: A Focus on Anambra State", while the National President of NUJ, Deacon Chris Isiguzo will be the Chief Host at the event.

Other special guests expected at the event are the Speaker, Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr. Somto Udeze, Chief Judge of the state, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu, Commissioner for Information, Mr. Paul Nwosu; Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Christian Aburime and other media handlers in the state. 

Highlights of the event will include; presentation of Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna Award for Ethical Journalism and the naming of a project after the winner of the Man of the Year Award as well as other side attractions.
