 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police.  FEDERAL POLYTECHNIC OKO HOLDS 19TH CONVOCATION CEREMONY

The Federal Polytechnic Oko on January 19, held her 19th Convocation ceremony for award of Higher National Diploma, conferment of fellowship awards and presentation of prizes at the polytechnic convocation arena.


The ceremony, which attracted a good number of well meaning Nigerians from all nooks and crannies was presided over  by the first female Rector of the polytechnic, Engr. Dr. Francisca Unoma Nwafulugo.


In her address, the rector noted that the convocation covered the period from 2010/2011 to 2020/2021 graduating sessions. 


"It is a momentous occasion that marks the culmination of years of hard work, dedication and perseverance.


"Today is a day of triumph not just for the graduands but for the entire community that has played a pivotal role in their academic success, grooming these young men and women in learning as well as in character.


"It's no doubt a big task. I remain grateful to God that we did not fail in the task."


Dr Nwafulugo also demonstrated the institution as one that is focused, resolute and passionately committed to the attainment of educational excellence.


The rector also mentioned her achievements from inception in 2019 which include; 

* Multiple accreditation exercise in a bid to ensure a more robust academics and make Federal Polytechnic Oko a pride destination of choice for candidates seeking admission in the ivory towers.


*Approval by NBTE to run Chinese Confucius language which is now in full operation.


* Reviewing the sitting pattern during examination which has achieved a sharp and drastic reduction in examination malpractice.


* Substantial progress with infrastructural development in the three campuses of the polytechnic. Oko, Ufuma, and Atani.


* Attracting the TETFUND and NBTE for most of the multi-million naira projects and interventions that the school has benefited from.


* Partnership with lnnoson vehicle motors with the signing of memorandum of understanding (MoU) which will see to the training of staff and students by the company, and many more achievements too numerous to mention.


Meanwhile, Fellowship Awards were awarded to the designated Nigerians who have contributed massively to the growth of the institution.


The awardees includes: Sen. Dr Ifeanyi Uba, Chief Dr Innocent Chukwuma (Chairman, Innoson gryoup), Dr Chidozie Nwankwo, and Prince Dr Arthur Eze.


Best graduating students were also awarded, and also received a cash awards from Dr Chidozie Nwankwo and Sen. Ifeanyi Uba.


Earlier, President Bola Tinubu urged Nigerian graduates to ensure that Nigeria does not lag behind in technical advancement. 


The president who was represented by the Minister of Education Prof Tahir Imammam, said this in his address.


 "We live in the era of science and technology, artificial intelligence has emerged as new global player and has thrown up new challenges.


"As a nation, we must ensure our relevance in the global landscape and set the stage for long term progress and prosperity."


Dignitaries  at the event include former Rectors of the institution, Prof. Eugene Nwadialor, and Prof. Godwin Onu, Vice Chancellor,  St. Paul's University Awka, Prof . Obiora Nwosu,  Rector, Anambra State Polytechnic, Dr. Njideka Ekezie and Traditional rulers  of some communities.
