 NEMA COORDINATES SAR OPS AT THE SCENE OF BUILDING COLLAPSE INVOLVING A THREE STOREY BUILDING UNDER CONSTRUCTION AT GUDU AREA OF FCT At about 0945hrs on Saturday 16th May, 2026, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) was alerted of a building collapse at Gudu District of FCT.  Critical stakeholders including Federal Fire, FCT Fire, NSCDC, NPF, FRSC and Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) were activated while a response team of NEMA from the Abuja Operations Office led by the Head of Operations Mr Zakari Abubakar  and operatives from AYA Emergency Response Bay (ERAB) were deployed to the scene for quick response and coordination.  A reinforcement team  from NEMA Headquarters led by the Director Search and Response (DSAR) Air Cdre Bature Usman was also on ground to provide necessary backup and supervision.  South African Police Arrest 540 Illegal Miners


South African authorities have forced 540 illegal miners out of an abandoned mine shaft in Orkney, arresting them for illegal mining activities.


South African authorities blocked food and water deliveries to the mine, leading to starvation and dehydration among the miners. Thousands of "zama zamas" (illegal miners) operate in South Africa.


Since December 2023, 13,690 suspects have been arrested, with R5 million in cash and R32 million in uncut diamonds seized. National Police Commissioner Lt Gen Shadrack Sibiya praised the operation, stating that the rule of law must be restored.
