Algerian president holds talks with senior Russian officials

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune on Thursday received Russian President's Special Representative for the Middle East and Africa, Mikhail Bogdanov, and Russian Deputy Defense Minister, Yunus-Bek Yevkurov, according to a statement from the Algerian Presidency.

The statement noted that the meeting was also attended by Chief of Staff of the Algerian Army Said Chengriha, without providing further details, Xinhua reported.

Earlier in the day, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf held talks with Bogdanov, addressing bilateral cooperation and global issues.

The Algerian Foreign Ministry stated that both sides expressed satisfaction with the "positive" outcomes of Tebboune's state visit to Russia in June 2023. They also exchanged views on the Sahel region and recent events in the Middle East, including Syria and the occupied Palestinian territories.

In October, Tebboune dismissed claims of significant disagreements with Russia, and emphasized the historic friendship between the two countries. Algeria has repeatedly expressed concerns over the presence of the private military company Wagner Group in the African Sahel region, particularly in Mali, saying it may exacerbate instability in the region.

Also on Thursday, Secretary-General of the Algerian Foreign Ministry, Lounes Magramane, co-chaired the sixth session of Algerian-Russian political consultations with Bogdanov.

The talks reviewed bilateral relations and explored ways to strengthen cooperation, particularly within the framework of the "Declaration on Deep Strategic Partnership" signed during Tebboune's June visit to Russia, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The statement noted that the consultations facilitated in-depth discussions on regional and international issues of mutual interest, reinforcing Algeria and Russia's commitment to enhancing their historic partnership.
