Sowore granted bail, rejects ā€˜unreasonable conditionsā€™

Former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, has disclosed that he has been granted bail following an engagement with the Force Intelligence Department of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja on Monday.

Sowore, however, stated he would refuse any bail conditions that he deems compromising to his ā€œinnocence, dignity, and integrity.ā€

PUNCH Online reports that the activist was summoned to address several allegations, including resisting and obstructing public officers, disobedience to lawful orders, cyberstalking, and acts allegedly intended to prevent arrests.

He, however, in a statement on X.com on Monday, alleged he is being targeted for his public criticism of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokunā€™s tenure extension.

He also alleged that the plan of the police ā€œis to detain me and take me to Lagos for a kangaroo trial.ā€

In a subsequent post, Sowore stated that the Deputy Inspector-General of the FID, Dasuki Galandachi, informed him of the bail offer pending the conclusion of an ā€œinvestigation.ā€

He wrote, ā€œThe DIG of FID, Dasuki Galandachi, at the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja had just informed me that he has instructed his personnel to grant me bail, pending the conclusion of the ā€œinvestigationā€.

ā€œI have also advised the DIG that in accepting ā€œbailā€, I will not agree to conditions that compromise my innocence, dignity, and integrity.

ā€œIf such unreasonable conditions are imposed, I will choose to remain in detention until I am charged to court, even then I know that there is no crime defined or to be investigated it is just the impunity that has become the hallmark of the PoliceNG hierarchy.ā€
