 Four people have died after a car was swept away at an overflowing bridge in the Makotopong River near Sebayeng. Police recovered the bodies after a blue Renault Kwid carrying five occupants was pulled into the river during heavy water flow on Sunday morning, 8 March 2026. One passenger escaped from the vehicle and alerted police and emergency services. Police say the car was travelling along the Madiga–Makotopong gravel road when it overturned at the flooded bridge and was dragged into the river. The Provincial Search and Rescue team recovered the first body on Sunday. The victim was identified as Lebapa Petrus Mochitele, 27, from Madiga Village. EMS personnel declared him dead at the scene. Search operations resumed on Monday with the SAPS Water Wing Unit, EMS Search and Rescue, the Fire and Rescue Department, and an EMS helicopter.  Driver, Apprentice Killed as Petrol Tanker Explodes in Ibadan


A petrol tanker explosion in Ibadan, Oyo State, has claimed the lives of a driver and his apprentice.


The incident occurred early Tuesday morning near Total Filling Station, Orita Challenge, when the tanker, carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), lost control due to brake failure while navigating a roundabout. The vehicle struck a concrete barrier, overturned, and caught fire.


Confirming the incident, Oyo State Fire Service General Manager, Yemi Akinyinka, stated that the fire was reported at 5:01 a.m. Firefighters, led by ACFS Olubunmi Christy, swiftly responded and used foam chemical compounds to contain the blaze.


The charred remains of the driver and his assistant were recovered and handed over to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for transport to the hospital. Firefighters from Sumal Food Limited also assisted in extinguishing the flames, and personnel remain on-site for cooling operations to prevent reignition.
