 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC). "We have made a collective decision: no electricity, no vote," said community leader Lesiba Rankapole, 59. "We know it is illegal, but we had no choice because we cannot live without electricity. FIRE ENGULFS PARTS OF ONITSHA MAIN MARKET IN ANAMBRA STATE. (PHOTO).

A devastating fire outbreak has ravaged parts of the Onitsha Main Market in Anambra State, Nigeria. The blaze, which began at approximately 6:20 am on Friday, quickly spread to adjacent buildings, causing widespread damage.


Eyewitnesses report that residents, passersby, and firefighters are working tirelessly to salvage properties and goods from the affected buildings. The cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.


Chukwudi Chiketa, Head of the Media and Publicity Unit of the Anambra State Fire Service, confirmed the incident and urged the public to remain calm. "Anambra State Fire Service is currently on intervention at the scene of the fire outbreak at Ifejika Street, by Sokoto Road, Onitsha," Chiketa stated.


Firefighters responded promptly to the distress call, which came in at 6:20 am. Chiketa assured the public that the situation is under control and that firefighters are working to quench the flames.
