A violent crisis erupted in Umusi/Olokwa Community, Owerri West LGA, Imo State, claiming the life of Stanley Nwoke, the Youth Leader-elect. The incident occurred two months after Nwoke was declared the winner of the Community Youth general election¹ ²[3).
According to DSP Henry Okoye, spokesperson for the Imo State Police Command, the attack took place on March 15, 2025, leaving four of Nwoke's siblings injured and nine houses burnt. Preliminary investigations revealed that the violence stemmed from the youth election held on January 3, 2025, which Nwoke won. However, a faction allegedly led by Chinaza Nwachukwu and others rejected the outcome and is suspected to be behind the attack.
Commissioner of Police CP Aboki Danjuma has condemned the killing and vowed to apprehend those responsible. Danjuma, along with his management team, visited the community for an on-the-spot assessment, commiserating with the bereaved families and those whose houses were destroyed.
The police have arrested four suspects, who are currently under investigation, while efforts are being made to apprehend other fleeing suspects. The deceased's body has been deposited in the morgue, and the injured victims are receiving medical care in the hospital.
CP Danjuma has assured the public that normalcy has been restored in Umusi/Olokwa Community, with security measures in place to prevent further unrest. He urged all stakeholders to remain calm and law-abiding, emphasizing that violence is not a solution to disputes.
The police are encouraging members of the public to provide credible information that could aid the ongoing investigation by contacting them via their emergency lines 0803 477 3600 and 0814 802 4755.
