China is set to unveil the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge in June 2025, poised to become the world’s highest bridge.

This engineering marvel spans approximately two miles across a vast canyon in Guizhou province, significantly reducing travel time across the region from about one hour to just one minute. The bridge’s deck will be suspended 625 meters above the Beipan River, surpassing the height of the Eiffel Tower by over 200 meters, and will weigh approximately 22,000 metric tonnes—equivalent to three Eiffel Towers.

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge is part of China’s broader initiative to enhance infrastructure in remote areas, particularly in Guizhou province, which is home to nearly half of the world’s 100 tallest bridges. The project aims to improve connectivity between the Liuzhi and Anlong Special Districts, fostering economic development and tourism in the region. Plans are underway to develop the area beneath the bridge into a center for extreme sports, including the world’s highest bungee jump, as well as living spaces and a glass walkway to attract tourists.

Construction of the bridge began in 2022, with rapid progress achieved through the installation of its massive steel trusses within just two months. Chief Engineer Li Zhao expressed immense pride in witnessing the bridge’s daily growth and its towering presence above the canyon. The bridge’s main span measures 1,420 meters, supported by two towers each standing 262 meters tall, contributing to its record-breaking height.

The Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge not only exemplifies China’s engineering prowess but also serves as a testament to the country’s commitment to integrating remote regions into the national infrastructure network. By drastically reducing travel time and promoting tourism, the bridge is expected to play a pivotal role in the socio-economic transformation of Guizhou province, aligning with China’s broader goals of regional development and modernization.
