PDP BoT Chair Wabara Declares Party ‘Alive,’ Predicts 2027 Triumph Amid Defection Rumors

Senator Adolphus Wabara, Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT), has reaffirmed the party’s resilience and unity, dismissing concerns over defections and declaring that the PDP will “rise again” to triumph in the 2027 general elections. Wabara made the statement during the inauguration of new BoT members at the National Executive Committee (NEC) Hall in Abuja on Monday, marking a key step in the party’s internal reorganization.

The ceremony, attended by prominent PDP figures including former Minister of Information Professor Jerry Gana, former Enugu Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, former Benue Governor Samuel Ortom, former Minister Labaran Maku, Senator Ahmed Makarfi, and Acting National Secretary Setonji Koshoedo, saw the induction of new trustees from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and the Federal Capital Territory. The event underscored the BoT’s role as the “conscience of the party,” tasked with providing wise counsel, ensuring stability, and upholding the PDP’s core values under Sections 31(5) and 32(1) of the party’s constitution.

Wabara emphasized the significance of the gathering, stating, “The presence of such a distinguished retinue dispels any speculation about disunity or defections. As long as the BoT remains vibrant, the PDP remains alive.” He urged the media to highlight the event as evidence of the party’s vitality, adding, “The PDP has risen, and the PDP will triumph in 2027.”

A light moment occurred when Wabara insisted that all new members stand for recognition, despite Professor Gana’s suggestion to shorten the process. Former Governor Ortom reinforced party unity by personally collecting his appointment letter, a gesture Wabara praised as symbolic of mutual respect.

Acting National Secretary Koshoedo, representing Acting National Chairman Ambassador Iliya Damagum, described the BoT as a “beacon for Africa” and pledged the National Working Committee’s reliance on its guidance. Senator Makarfi, BoT Secretary, noted that the nomination process remains ongoing, with additional members to be inaugurated as finalized.

The event addressed concerns over the inactivity of 85 out of 127 former BoT members, signaling a revitalized advisory body to steer the PDP forward. With the new trustees in place, the party aims to project a unified front as it prepares to challenge for power in 2027, undeterred by recent defections.
