The Anambra State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has extended a heartfelt plea to Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, and other former members to return to the party. The call was made during an enlarged State Executive Committee (SEC) meeting in Awka on Thursday, aimed at reviewing the party’s status and strategizing for future success.
In a communique signed by Anambra PDP Chairman Chidi Chidebe, the party emphasized the need for unity, cautioning against alliances with ideologically incompatible groups. “The committee extends an open invitation to all aggrieved and former members of the PDP in Anambra, particularly our revered former governor, Mr. Peter Obi, to return home and reunite with the now rejuvenated and restructured PDP,” Chidebe stated. “We will gladly welcome our brothers and sisters back to join us in the collective quest for a better Nigeria.”
Obi, a former Anambra governor, defected to the Labour Party in 2022 after deeming his presidential ambitions unattainable within the PDP. The party’s appeal comes as it seeks to consolidate support ahead of upcoming elections.
Chidebe urged Anambra voters to back PDP’s governorship candidate, Jude Ezenwafor, and his running mate, Francis Okeke, while calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure a transparent and impartial electoral process. “We call on the good people of Anambra to remain steadfast in their historic support for the PDP and to come out en masse to vote for our candidates,” he said.
The SEC also announced the unanimous nomination of Chief Clems Ezike as National Ex-Officio from Anambra, urging the Southeast Zonal Executive Committee, led by Chief Ali Odefa, to recognize and forward the nomination to the national secretariat. The party commended its national leadership for the successful National Executive Committee meeting on May 27, expressing satisfaction with efforts to resolve internal crises.
The PDP’s outreach to Obi and others signals a strategic move to strengthen its base in Anambra and beyond as political activities intensify.
